I Loved You Until My Dignity Said “it’s Not Worth It”

In all the relationships we maintain, whether sentimental or not, we must be clear that, just as we respect our neighbor, he must assert our dignity

The dignity is the personal and emotional edge that serves as a psychological protection. Depending on where this limit is, our personal and social relationships will enjoy better health and balance.

The dignity in emotional relationships must not accept discounts or concessions. The moment we begin to give in and allow one renunciation after another, this exceptional and courageous fabric will fall apart.

If we think about it, we will realize that there are very few times we stop to analyze this very intimate and important dimension.

We don’t do this, first of all, because they educated us on the idea that if we love someone, we have to give everything in exchange for nothing for that person.

Sometimes it is very complicated to be able to see where authentic reciprocity begins and where this limit ends in which the hissing, discreet but voracious blackmail already opens, with which our emotions are manipulated.

It is important to keep this in mind, to safeguard our personal integrity. Below we invite you to reflect on the following dimensions.

Dignity is the respect you have for yourself

I loved you until my dignity said “it’s not worth it”.

If you have ever found yourself in this situation, you will remember the inner process by which you realized that love, at times, has a limit, and it is called dignity.

Dignity and self-esteem

People build their self-esteem over the course of their life cycle. The model according to which we are educated is certainly of great importance, but it is not decisive, believe it or not.

It is not for various reasons. We all have experiences that, overnight, can break many of our inner forces.

  • A job in which our rights are violated.
  • A complicated personal relationship.
  • An accident, a traumatic loss, a disappointment …

There are many causes that can fragment the balance of our self-esteem. By this we mean that sometimes we believe ourselves invulnerable.

We think that nothing can damage our strength, that we can face everything. However, we believe it because we stay in our comfort zone.

The moment some external factors cause us to lose the feeling of self-control, we lose everything.

Relationships in which we “launch” with our eyes closed

We know, there are loves to which we deliver ourselves with blindfolded eyes and a burning heart. They are leaps into the void that we do freely because we want it to be so, because we feel it.

All this would be defensible only if we did not put our dignity on the line. There are emotional relationships in which, at times, we do not see the limits.

We give everything without expecting anything. Any effort is little to make the partner happy.

Until, one day, we realize the deep emptiness we feel inside.

Nothing is missing, it just goes wrong; nothing is in harmony and all the energy is taken away by one person, while the other feeds only on crumbs, and that person is you.

There are times in our life when it is worth being brave and taking the risk.

However, remember that you have to take risks while maintaining certainties: self-esteem, dignity and the right to be happy.

When one of these elements is missing, we will have to make a decision.

Our thoughts empower us

When you find yourself in an emotionally complex situation and you wish to strengthen your dignity, verbalize the sentences that we present to you below.

If you reflect on these guidelines, you will internalize some thoughts that can ignite an emotion in you, that of courage.

Take note:

  • Nobody can or should tell me how happy I should be.
  • Those who truly love do not submit and do not oblige.
  • The right partner strengthens my self-esteem, it doesn’t destroy it.
  • Whoever loves me cares about me every day.
  • Living together requires knowing how to work as a team. Those who think only of themselves cannot live together.
  • I have the right to express my thoughts, to say what I want and what I don’t want.
  • Saying “no” to something does not mean being selfish: it means defending one’s dignity.
  • I deserve to be loved.

  • True love begins with yourself. If at the moment everything around me makes me believe that I am worth nothing, it means that there is something wrong. I have to react.
  • I can and must control my reality. I don’t have to submit to what others want or want.
  • I am not obliged to please and please everyone.
  • I am a beautiful, courageous and worthy person to be happy like any other. Nobody has to put barbed wire on my life and my desires.
  • I will defend the people I love above all else. However, I also demand that the people who love me respect me, defend me and value me as a merit.

In conclusion, personal dignity is an issue to which we should pay more attention. It gives us that happiness that we should all enjoy every day.
