Macrogol is a laxative drug that works by releasing its effects thanks to the osmotic action of the intestine. Its mechanism of action favors the increase in fecal volume and stimulates the motility of the colon.

Thanks to the osmotic effect, it improves the transport of softened stools, favoring defecation. It is recommended that macrogol be administered for as short a period of time as possible to prevent unwanted effects.

Macrogol-based treatment is an aid against chronic constipation, in fact it is also necessary to adopt a series of hygiene and food measures. These measures include the increase in the consumption of liquids and dietary fiber.

It is also necessary to perform regular physical activity. If you ignore these aspects, the medicine will only be a momentary patch that does not fix the root problem.

What dosage to take?

Macrogol can be given at any time, with food and drink or on an empty stomach. The dosage of this drug depends on the severity of the constipation.

After a few days from the start of therapy, it will be possible to reduce the dosage. In case of chronic constipation, the usual amount for adults is one sachet, one to three times a day. In most cases, 1 or 2 sachets per day are sufficient.

Depending on the reaction and the situation of each person, it can be up to three sachets per day. The average duration of treatment is 2 weeks. If after this period the symptoms of constipation continue, you should see your doctor.

If the aim is to counteract fecal impaction, the dosage will be higher: 8 sachets per day in a period of six hours, up to a maximum of 3 days.

How to take the drug?

To take macrogol, you have to dissolve the contents of a sachet in half a glass of water and drink it as soon as possible. In case of fecaloma treatment, 8 sachets must be dissolved in a liter of water.

If necessary, the dosage can be increased to two sachets per day. Before increasing the dosage, however, it is advisable to wait a few days to evaluate the effects of the drug, which begin to appear within 24-48 hours after administration.

What are the unwanted effects of macrogol?

This drug can cause some side effects, classified according to their frequency:

  • Very rare side effects: Anaphylactic reactions such as difficulty breathing or swelling of the throat and face are rare. The same applies to hypersensitivity in the form of allergic skin reactions.
  • Very common: These side effects occur following a high dose, with possible presence of diarrhea. They tend to disappear a day or two after macrogol discontinuation.
  • Common reactions: This group includes pain and abdominal tension.

Contraindications and interactions of macrogol

The most common side effect of macrogol is diarrhea with loose, heavy stools, in addition to abdominal pain.

The drug is contraindicated in the following cases:

  • Children under 12 years old.
  • Gastrointestinal perforation.
  • Small bowel obstruction.

Macrogol is also contraindicated in the presence of hypersensitivity to the active substance or if you suffer from ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease or toxic megacolon.

As for the interaction with other drugs, it is advisable not to take any other drugs between one hour before and one hour after taking the macrogol sachet. It is advisable to consult your doctor before starting to take this laxative while pregnant or breastfeeding.

The consumption of laxatives and their dosage depend on the severity of the constipation. Osmotic drugs such as macrogol are recommended because they are easily tolerated and safe. However, medicines are not enough if you don’t change your habits, diet and do sports.
